What Sewage cleanup work involves.
A sewage backup is a contamination event, not a spill. Category 3 water carries bacteria and viruses, which changes everything about how the work is done — protective equipment, containment, and disposal of porous material rather than cleaning it.
We assess the category and extent, contain the area, extract the contaminated water, remove what cannot be decontaminated, then clean, disinfect and dry the structure before any rebuilding starts. This is not a job to start yourself and hand over halfway.
Pro tip
Switch the HVAC off. Running it draws contaminated air through the ductwork and spreads the problem into rooms the water never reached.

Identify the category of water, isolate the affected area, and keep the contamination from spreading further into the property.

Extract and remove
Contaminated water out, and porous materials that cannot be decontaminated removed and disposed of properly.

Clean and disinfect
Hard surfaces cleaned, disinfected and treated, with attention to everything the water reached rather than only what is visible.

Dry and repair
The structure dried to target, then rebuilt — flooring, drywall and finishes returned.

Working with your insurer.
Sewer and drain backup is commonly excluded from the base policy and added by endorsement — often with a modest limit. Many owners find out at claim time that they do not have it. It is worth checking your schedule before you need it.
Where coverage exists, carriers generally expect professional remediation and documentation of what was disposed of. We record the category of water, the affected area and the disposal, because contaminated material that was thrown away without evidence is difficult to claim for.
